The goal of the project DONAUHANSE is to establish a network of cities, which provides sound solutions to similar problems with the greatest possible benefit for all participating cities and regions along the Danube.


The main objective of the research project optihubs is the development of a standardized inland waterway port optimization tool based on innovative simulation algorithms. Logistical, operational and administrative processes and general requirements will be connected. In terms of the potential of relevant groups of goods for inland waterway transport a catalogue of requirements based on processes, cargo flows, handling volumes and transport operations is created.

optihubs builds on the results of the Smart Hubs 2.0 project which focused on the optimization of multimodal hubs in corridor VII (Danube corridor).


A criteria catalogue for the optimization of administrative, operative and logistic processes at a multimodal hub was already developed based on processes, transport flows, amounts of water-side cargo, traffic movements and other factors. Process sequences at the port of Vienna were registered with suitable methods and complemented for certain groups of goods with good practices from other ports (e.g. Duisburg). Algorithms for standardized processes were developed as part of the simulation model. The results of the model are transferrable to other ports as well.
