IAWD: Danube Water Program – Smart Policies, Strong Utilities, Sustainable Services

16.07.2013 | EU water policy, EU regional policy

The „Danube Water Program“ is a new program jointly run by IAWD and the World Bank. Its goals are “smart policies, strong utilities, and sustainable services” in the water supply and wastewater sector in the Danube region. The program works with local, regional, and national stakeholders to promote an informed policy dialogue about the core challenges facing the sector. Another goal is the strengthening of the technical and managerial capacity of the sector’s utilities and institutions.

The Program currently covers the water supply and sanitation sector in the following eleven countries: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Kosovo, FYR Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia, and Ukraine. Further countries in the Region can participate but cannot directly benefit from Program funding.

The Danube Water Program is administered by a program team, which is hosted by the World Bank’s office in Vienna. The Program started its first activities in early 2013 and is scheduled to complete its activities in October 2015.

The International Association of Water Supply Companies in the Danube River Catchment Area (IAWD) aims to improve and safeguard the water quality of the Danube and its tributaries. It encourages all measures and efforts aimed at avoiding and eliminating the pollution of, and threat to, the status of raw water in the interest of drinking water supply.

The IAWD was established in 1993 by utilities from ten different countries in the Danube Region. It is headquartered in Vienna, Austria, and hosted by one of its founding members, Vienna Water Works, which is a Municipal Department of the City of Vienna.
