The goal of the project DONAUHANSE is to establish a network of cities, which provides sound solutions to similar problems with the greatest possible benefit for all participating cities and regions along the Danube.

First CUPA Workshop in Bratislava

CUPA workshop - CUPA Bratislava
Date: 20th - 22nd of September 2010
Venue: Town hall of the City of Bratislava

The first project workshop, which took place from 20.-22.09.2010, was hosted by the City of Bratislava. Bratislava's Mayor, Andrej Durkovsky, opened the event and welcomed the international participants.

Since the workshop marked the first meeting of the project partners, it started off with a presentation of problem areas of the other project partner cities, in order to provide an outlook to the following workshops and enable a comparison of the different problems. Participants also included Abby Hall from the Environmental Protection Agency in Washington, who presented the tasks and responsibilities of her department and also contributed to the discussion on the issues faced by Bratislava's planners.

In order to gain an overview of the area addressed by this workshop and of the problems and challenges arising for planners, a "problem statement", which has already been prepared in the run-up to the workshop, was presented by employees of the City of Bratislava and the relevant area was inspected on site. The area concerned is located in the southeast of the city (district of Petrzalka) between the Danube and the Austrian-Slovak border. The challenge consists in the (possible) form of cooperation with the neighbouring municipalities in Austria, which have already formulated their visions for the development of the Austrian part of the relevant area under the KOBRA+ project. The issues to be discussed from the perspective of the City of Bratislava included a green belt running along the border, which was planned under the KOBRA+ project, the revitalisation of old Danube arms in the area and the integration of these two ideas.
On the second day, participants worked together in small groups to elaborate a functional concept for the area and outline the processes involved.

The results of the group work, which partly matched, or complemented, the City of Bratislava's ideas for the area were presented to employees of the City of Vienna in a joint final session.
As one of the outcomes of the workshops, a final report including a summary of the workshop results will be prepared and sent to the workshop host and participants.
