CUPA workshop - CUPA Novi Sad
Date: 28th - 30th of March 2012
Venue: The Cultural Centre Novi Sad
The fourth workshop of the CUPA (Cooperative Urban Planning Approaches) project was held in Novi Sad from 28 to 30 March. The main task of the workshop was to elaborate a perspective for the development of the Fisherman & Kamenica Islands recreational areas and of the former industrial estate known as "Chinese Quarter". In her opening remarks, Jelena Atanackovic Jelicic, City Councillor for Urban Development and Environmental Protection, underlined the great potential of the area due to its close proximity to the city centre. In their opening presentations, Aleksandar Jevtic, Director of JP "Urbanizam" Zavod za Urbanizam Novi Sad, and Darko Polic described the current state of planning, the special characteristics of the relevant area and its relation to Novi Sad.
Equipped with a lot of new information, the workshop participants visited the study area to get a first-hand impression of the current situation. The vision for the Chinese Quarter developed by the international experts provides for the preservation and further strengthening of the current mixed use of the area. The idea developed for the Fisherman & Kamenica Islands recreational areas envisages the two islands being used for different purposes. While the concept for Fisherman Island aims at strengthening the island's event character, the plans for Kamenica Is and focus on emphasising the area's recreational functions.
